Yet another great story in the news highlighting the importance of finding an appropriate fit in hiring.  Richard Branson,  founder of the Virgin Group (and a host of other companies) snapped this picture with a sleeping staff member during a visit to the Virgin Australia offices.

His recap:

I popped into the office and the airport to say hello and check in to see what the team are up to. This guy wasn’t up to much at all — I caught him sleeping on the job! Wow, did he get a shock when I woke him up. He must have thought he was dreaming because he went straight back to sleep. To be fair, he was on standby, getting some much needed rest.

If this employee were caught napping in many companies, despite his being in a break room, he’d be disciplined or at least ridiculed by upper management.

Other organizations (think Google, some nonprofits and creative firms) fully embrace sleep as a productivity tool to the point of having sleep pods accessible to team members.

As you evaluate career opportunities or your next hire, here are a few things to think about.

For Employees Making Career Moves

  • Goal: Find a place that will honor your skills and be a good fit
  • A few things to consider:
    • What facets of a job are most important to you (career growth, compensation, flexibility in work location and schedule, opportunity for upward mobility, teamwork/collegial atmosphere, etc.)?
    • What are the espoused values and what does that company value in action?
    • What is the organization known for?

For Leaders Seeking out New Talent

  • Goal: Find employees with the right skills and who also fit into the culture you have or are trying to build
  • A few things to consider:
    • What personality traits are needed to succeed in your organization (flexibility, creativity, initiative, ability to thrive in teams, independent thinking, etc.)?
    • What values do the most celebrated members of your team embody (loyalty, dependability, transparency, etc)?
    • What perks do you offer employees to encourage outstanding performance (outside of their paycheck)?
