Diversity Recruitment is Key

The NYC schools have realized what a number of organizations are noting – students of color need teachers of color more than ever. Having teachers of various races and ethnicities that mirror student demographics makes sense – it combats negative stereotypes, promotes self-esteem and is linked to improved academic outcomes for students.

In an effort to recruit and retain Black, Latino and Asian male teachers in NY, a $16.5M 3 year initiative is being rolled out.

How do you think it will fare? What is the most important component for making something like this work? What about addressing mindset and bias on the graduate and undergraduate levels (and earlier) that keep men from entering the teaching force?
